Port Townsend is one of Washington’s most charming small towns, with its historic downtown of Victorian buildings housing shops and restaurants, all perched on a bluff overlooking a large bay with Whidbey Island in the distance.
Start your day at the Blue Moose Café on the waterfront. You’ll be treated to a cheap and filling breakfast for around $10.
Consider centering your visit around a local event, many of which reflect the quirks of the community: the Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race, Rhododendron Festival, Acoustic Blues Festival, Wooden Boat Festival and more.
Otherwise, you can spend the day walking through downtown, exploring nearby Fort Worden State Park, and checking out some of the town’s historic sites. Some of these activities are free while others involve minimal fees of $5 to $10.
Lunch at spots like Owl Sprit Café, hearty and healthy, should run around $15.
A local favorite is the Pourhouse taproom and bottle shop, where you can sample regional brews poured from 12 taps. This is a great place to linger, too, with its waterfront views. Dinner at a nearby spot like the Silverwater Café or Public House Grill will round out your visit.
