Trends / Food & Drink

For most cold-weather cities, the time for al fresco dining and rooftop libations has come to a close, except for our nation’s capital. Scope out the icy views and winter scenery of Washington, D.C., from the warmth of these swanky rooftop bars — even in December in the Northeast.

Top of the Gate, The Watergate Hotel

Take in panoramic views of the Potomac River, the Kennedy Center and the entire D.C. skyline from the Top of the Gate, the swanky rooftop bar of the Watergate Hotel. Rent skates for $10–20 per hour and ice skate around the bar and lounge’s all-new rooftop rink. Skate up to the bar and warm up with drinks and seasonal menu items.

The rink is brought to the Watergate Hotel through partnership with Mel’s Rink, a non-profit organization providing athletic training and development opportunities to mentally and physically challenged individuals. Dig into some hot pretzels, mulled wine and skate and be merry.

The Next Whiskey Bar Igloos

Also at the Watergate, guests can upgrade for a private experience with a luxury igloo. Guests from two–eight people can reserve one of the four, 12-foot heated, lavish igloos complete with stylish furnishings and service. Reservations begin at $200 per igloo with a variety of menu options from tasting menus to whiskey and burger pairings.

Crimson View at Pod DC

If you’re in the Chinatown neighborhood, step in to the Pod DC and head up to Crimson View for local brews and wine. Enjoy views of the city with floor-to-ceiling windows in this newly opened space.
