While you may think of North Dakota as an ideal vacation destination for summer outdoor adventures or as a highlight along a warm-weather road trip, the state offers plenty to enjoy throughout snowier months, as well.
Attend one of the marquee winter festivals if you have a little flexibility in your travel dates. Vinterfest kicks off Jan. 18, and lasts for a month; across the central portion of the state, a wealth of activities celebrates all things winter, from cultural activities to workshops to skiing. On Jan. 31, Fargo-Moorhead celebrates Frostival, with free winter activities including snow yoga and sledding.
If you’re still keen on enjoying some of those outdoor activities, consider visiting Theodore Roosevelt National Park, where you can get in some wildlife watching with the park’s resident prairie dogs, elk, bison and pronghorns all still active.
For both ice fishing and fat-tire biking, Lake Metigoshe is a good pick. Meanwhile, those who prefer ice skating will find rinks in cities such as Fargo and Grand Forks.
For something a little faster-paced, try snowmobiling. The state offers nearly 3,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.
