Just less than one month ago, Fairmont Cheshire, The Mere opened on its nearly 160-acre estate. The fifth Fairmont in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the renovated property encompasses 116 guestrooms (including 23 suites); a spacious spa (with multiple pools, a sauna and hammam facilities); and a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, among other dining options.

Throughout renovation, Bergman Design House, responsible for the property’s interior design, channeled the estate’s woods, waters and history to create a tranquil countryside escape that nonetheless reflects Fairmont’s identity as an international luxury hospitality brand. This can be seen from the linens and layered lighting in the guestrooms, to the use of unique materials such as Japanese lacquer, natural stone and handcrafted zellige tiles.

“The Mere is a property with real history, and our responsibility here was never to impose a style on it but to let the setting lead. Every material decision was tested against that lake view. When a space has this much natural character already, restraint is the harder skill — knowing what to leave alone matters as much as what you add,” described Marie Soliman, co-founder, Bergman Design House.
