What to Pack for a Trip to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula

Tips / Destination

If you are planning a trip to the Yucatan, it’s important to consider the wide range of activities that you could take part in.

While there are plenty of amazing beaches to enjoy, the Yucatan has far more to offer than stretches of white sand. Of course, pack a few bits of swimming gear and perhaps some goggles and a snorkel, but remember some other items.

It’s worth taking a pair of sturdy shoes you can use to explore the interior of the peninsula, with its spellbinding sinkholes known as cenotes. Make sure your footwear is comfortable enough for a couple of hours of hiking, with decent grip on loose rock.

Be careful to pack a good insect repellent. Whether you are on the beach or in the jungle, biting insects have the potential to ruin your trip. It’s almost impossible to avoid bites altogether, but a strong repellent will help keep them to a minimum. Anyone with sensitivity to insect bites should take antihistamines with them in case of a reaction.

If you are planning on exploring rather than lazing on the beach, take a flashlight and a pocket knife with you. It is also a good idea to take lightweight long-sleeved shirts and long trousers, which will protect against sun and insects without making you too hot.

It goes without saying you should pack sun cream and moisturizer. Keep yourself protected and you’ll be able to enjoy the delights of the Yucatan in comfort.
