Dreaming of an ultra-luxury vacation in 2025? You might consider taking a gander at some of the world’s costliest destinations for 2024. A study conducted by travel insurance provider Squaremouth identified where travelers spent the most on individual trips this year, with the world’s most expensive destination demanding an average trip cost of $28,594.

For over a decade, African safari destinations reigned supreme as the most expensive destinations for travelers, according to Squaremouth, and 2024 was no different. The most expensive destination, based on average trip cost, was Djibouti. Just picking the second-most expensive destination on the list, though, will save you about $10,000. Botswana boasts an average trip cost of $18,734.

The full list of the 10 most expensive destinations for 2024 by average trip cost also includes (in descending order) Antarctica, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Zimbabwe, Central African Republic, Tanzania, French Southern Territories and Antarctic Lands, Namibia, and Kenya.

In total, Squaremouth noted more than 15,000 travelers spent more than $82 million visiting these destinations. However, tourism to these locales is down, with visitor numbers decreasing by nearly a third this year.
