If you’ve ever flown with Southwest Airlines, you know that, while the airline offers affordable airfare, you’re sometimes giving up a few little luxuries in exchange for that cheaper price — like the ability to choose your seat at the time of booking. Well, that’s no longer the case.
As of July 29, if you’re booking a flight for Jan. 27, 2026, or later, you’re able to select your seat at that time.
“Our customers want more choice and greater control over their travel experience,” said Tony Roach, executive vice president, customer and brand, Southwest Airlines. “Assigned seating unlocks new opportunities for our customers — including the ability to select Extra Legroom seats — and removes the uncertainty of not knowing where they will sit in the cabin…”
However, take note this change isn’t as straightforward as it seems. It’s still the case that not everyone will be able to pick their seat when booking. You’ll have to purchase a particular fare bundle in order to select your seat at booking, as well as to access upgraded seats. However, if you’re a Rapid Rewards credit card cardholder, you can select a seat at booking or up to 48 hours before departure, no matter what fare you purchase. This exception also applies to A-List and A-List Preferred members.
