Italy’s long East Coast is home to many ports that serve destinations across the Adriatic and Ionian seas.
You can sail from Venice to a number of destinations in Croatia, all relatively short hops to ports such as Umag, Porec, Rovinj and Pula.
Further south, ferries ply the waters between Cesenatico and Rovinj, Mali Losini and Rab, while Pesaro serves Rab and Novalja.
You can also sail from Ancona to Zadar, Split and Stari Grad, or Civitanova Marche to Split and Hvar.
Down in Puglia, you can get from Bari to Dubrovnik in southern Croatia, as well as Bar in Montenegro and Durres in Albania.
Greece is another popular destination for ferries from eastern Italy, with Brindisi and Ancona important departure points. Travelers can get to Corfu, Patras, Igoumenitsa and Zakynthos from these ports, as well as Venice and Bari.
These ferry routes are a great way of continuing overland from Italy to the Balkans and Greece on longer driving trips. Igoumenitsa is on the Greek mainland and would save a lot of driving for those trying to get to Athens or Turkey overland.
If you haven’t got plans to go that far afield, stick around in Croatia and island hop up and down the Dalmatian Coast before heading back over to Italy.
