Perched high above the bustling city of Lisbon, Portugal, is Castelo de São Jorge, a fortress that currently rests in ruins but still attracts visitors thanks to its breathtaking views.

To access the castle, hike the short but steep climb to the entrance or take Tram 28 that passes through the Alfama district on one side and Lisbon’s Sé Cathedral on the other side. Artists and musicians surround the area just outside the walls, providing an entertaining walkway to the ticket office that rests just outside the castle.

General admission tickets are €8.50 (approximately $9.10) and include access to the entire exhibit including the castle and grounds.

Once through the admission gates, walk straight toward the edge of the hill where a stone wall lies between you and captivating vistas of Lisbon proper, including the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge in the distance. As the trail winds its way toward the castle, the views continue, with plenty of places to stop for photos or soak in the view for a few moments of peace.

As the castle comes into view, cross the drawbridge to enter and take your pick of the iron staircases, each of which leads to a raised pedestrian path along the castle walls where even higher views present three unique sides of the city.

After exploring the castle’s interior, stop by the café located within the grounds for a shot of ginjinha, a cherry liquor served in a chocolate shot glass, as friendly peacocks strut their stuff through the gardens.
