Hangzhou is a beautiful, ancient Chinese city. Located in the heart of Hangzhou, West Lake is the city’s best-known attraction. The beauty of West Lake inspired artists, poets and scholars since the ninth century. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. West Lake is home to beautiful flora, including abundant lotus and osmanthus, the city’s flower. Mallards and halcyons are among the most prevalent birds in the West Lake area. Koi carp fill the lake and locals affectionately call them the West Lake fish. Pagodas, temples and gardens surround the lake, allowing for picturesque views while touring the lake. Pathways surround the lake and gardens, ideal for a scenic stroll.

If you’re interested in an up-close view, take a boat tour of West Lake, starting at about $30. Motorized and hand-paddled boats are available. For a different perspective of the lake, check out Impression West Lake. The nightly show is directed by Zhang Yimou, the director of the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. The stage sits three inches below the water on West Lake, giving the effect the performers are walking on the lake. While the performers, lighting, sets and special effects make up the performance, West Lake is truly the star of the show.
