Under $100 / North America

Washington’s state capital is an under-appreciated destination. The town prides itself on great oysters, harvested fresh from the southern reaches of Puget Sound and a rising craft beer scene.

Start your morning with breakfast standards at the worker-owned New Moon Cooperative Café, where specialties like the fried egg sandwich or the veggie scramble will leave you with a minimal bill of around $12.

Next, take a stroll at the enchanting and dramatic Tumwater Falls Park. If you visit in fall, keep an eye out for salmon heading upstream to spawn.

Then stroll Olympia’s superb downtown farmers market, where you can slurp fresh oysters and listen to live music.

For lunch, head to Three Magnets Brewing, located downtown. Try the local beer paired with great food for around $20.

Walk off your lunch with a stroll around Capitol Lake, a scenic spot to take in views of the Washington State capitol building. Or, head to Tugboat Annie’s to explore the scenic inlets around Olympia via kayak. Budget $45 for two people for two hours.

End your day with a walk through the new food hall, 222 Market. Dine at the Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar, a new restaurant and bar operated by the owners of a local shellfish farm. Slurp fresh oysters and enjoy top-notch cocktails and modern seafood dishes. You will need the remaining $23 for dinner.
