Located on the crossroads of North Africa and the Middle East, Ethiopia is one of the most fascinating countries to visit in the region. Be sure to follow these tips to make your travels as smooth as possible
Arriving
The capital of Addis Ababa is the main hub for Ethiopian Airlines, the sole domestic airline in the country, which connects to most other capitals of Africa. If you have a hotel reserved, it will probably offer free pick-up.
Visa
You’re probably going to need a visa if you come here. Unless you’re a national of Djibouti or Kenya, visitors must get a tourist visa upon arrival for up to three months. Keep in mind extending the visa is a long and expensive process, so plan ahead for stays longer than a month.
Rail
For getting around the country, your best bet is by train, currently undergoing a drastic modernization thanks to foreign investment. The first line from Addis Ababa to Djibouti will open in early 2017. There’s also a light rail network in Addis Ababa, as well as two more long-distance lines under construction right now.
Road
There is an extensive network of bus routes, but the best way to experience the country is by car. Find a reputable tour operator and agree on a price beforehand to ensure a relaxing trip.
