Tips for Taking Your Dog on a Road Trip

For most dog lovers the thought of leaving home on a road trip without their four-legged friend is downright blasphemous. He’s your best friend and he belongs by your side on all your adventures. If you’re planning a road trip with Fido next summer, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Scope Out Hotels Early

Most hotels don’t accept dogs and if you don’t want to sleep by the side of the road you’re going to need to plan ahead. Plot your route and call ahead for reservations at joints that’ll accommodate your friend.

Bring a Puppy Travel Kit

All the essentials from home, from the doggie bowl to shampoo, are going to have to come along for the ride. Luckily, there are plenty of travel versions available for you to pack along on the ride. Buy some collapsible bowls, small toys and even foldable mats for your best bud to sleep on during your trip.

Practice Car Rides

While the stereotype of the car-ride loving pooch usually holds true, some dogs are actually afraid of riding on four wheels. Make sure to take some trips around town to get him used to the feel, check for signs of nausea and simply practice some basic car manners before you go.

Stop Often

Dogs can’t hold it as long as humans, so schedule in quite a few puppy pee breaks along the way. Bring along some poop bags, too, and always clean up after his messes. Don’t be that dog owner that everyone else hates.

Check With Your vet

Always, always make sure your dog is healthy enough for the trip before heading out. Pop in to the vet for a checkup and, if your dog is prone to anxiety, see if he’ll prescribe any meds that’ll help make the adventure a little easier on your friend.
