It’s time to start dreaming of your next trip. Here are six must-see sites in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The origins of the city may trace back to the earliest humans, but Addis Ababa continues to look toward the future. The high-altitude city boasts a low crime index and many cultural attractions. Addis Ababa is also unique in its distinct architectural style; the city wasn’t built as a colonial settlement and therefore doesn’t have a European style of architecture. The city is also eyeing a more global position with a financial district currently under construction. © Isselee | Dreamstime.com
Immerse yourself in the energy, sights, sounds and smells of the city at Addis Mercato, a massive, open-air marketplace that holds the record as the largest open-air market in Africa. Built to commemorate Ethiopia’s victory over Italian occupation, Holy Trinity Cathedral is an important place of worship in the country. Just south of the city is Tiya, an archaeological and UNESCO World Heritage site dated as far back as the 10th century. These stone structures were tombstones and feature intricate carvings and symbols, many with designs akin to swords. © Miroslav Liska | Dreamstime.com
Timkat, also known as the Ethiopian Epiphany, is a three-day religious festival celebrated every January. The event honors the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, and Addis Ababa hosts one of the country’s largest Timkat festivals around Jan Meda field.
