There are few things better than a cold beer on a warm summer afternoon, but, unfortunately, alcohol does not hydrate you the way water would. Follow these tips to stay hydrated while enjoying a drink in the summer heat.
The best weapon against a hangover is preventative hydration. As always, don’t booze on an empty stomach and be sure you are adequately hydrated before hitting the bar. Feeling excessively thirsty may encourage you to drink more than you normally would.
Sip water while enjoying your drink and between beverages. One cup of water per serving of alcohol is a good rule of thumb. Spice it up by ordering a club soda or adding a lime wedge to your water.
Hydration doesn’t have to be boring. Enjoy the flavors of summer by eating hydrating fruits, such as watermelon, while sipping your drink. Go old school and snack on ice pops in between cocktails — make your own to cut down on added sugar and preservatives.
While it is always a good idea to be mindful of hydration when boozing, it is even more important during the hot summer months. With these few small tweaks, it’s easy to drink and stay hydrated too. Bottoms up!
