Make the Most of the Basque Region

The Basque Region straddles the border between France and Spain on the Atlantic coast, and retains strong local traditions.

Unfortunately, the area has made headlines in the past few decades because of the activities of ETA, the armed wing of the Basque separatist movement. However the focus on the actions of a tiny minority of people takes away from the beautiful mountains, beaches and cities that make up this misunderstood region.

Beginning in France, the city of Bayonne boasts a rich culinary heritage and is the oldest bullfighting town in the country, while the seaside resort of Biarritz is nestled around a series of spectacular bays popular with surfers. Take a short trip down the coastal road to the picturesque town of St-Jean-de-Luz, where it is almost obligatory to tuck into a pile of mussels and fries. Take a bike out for the day if you’re feeling energetic; it’s a 32-kilometer round-trip.

Over the border with Spain lies the beautiful city of San Sebastian, with a picturesque Old Town that is home to a massive concentration of highly-regarded restaurants. Spend your days swimming in the large bay, and enjoying the laid-back pace of life.

If San Sebastian feels a little too sleepy for your liking, Bilbao will shake you from your slumber. This wealthy, bustling city is home to a Guggenheim Museum, a destination worth visiting in its own right. Here, you will get a real feel for Basque culture, especially if you time your visit to coincide with an Athletic Bilbao soccer game.
