The mountain town of Leavenworth, in Washington state, is a major draw for outdoor enthusiasts, weekending families and even wine drinkers. The Bavarian-themed town might seem cheesy at the outset, but look a little deeper, and there’s plenty to enjoy.
The mountains are the obvious attraction here. Hikes into the stunning Cascade Mountains lead to alpine lakes and scenic overlooks, with top picks like Colchuck Lake and Icicle Ridge. Other area outdoors activities include stand-up paddle boarding, whitewater rafting, rock climbing and zip lining. In winter, the area is ideal for downhill and cross-country skiing.
Downtown Leavenworth is packed with shops, restaurants and a collection of outstanding wine tasting rooms. You can buy artisan cheese, small-batch charcuterie and other goods to pair with your sips or a bottle. Among the best options for wine tastings are Icicle Ridge, Eagle Creek, Stemilt Creek, WineGirl Wines and Boudreaux Cellars.
The town is a foodie paradise, with great options like Watershed Bistro for upscale local fare, or more casual options that pair with the Bavarian theme like Munchen Haus and Leavenworth Sausage Garten, both of which offer beer and brats with plenty of outdoor seating.
