Tips / Safety

Hurricane season in the eastern United States annually occurs June–November, with a peak in late August through September. Unfortunately, this coincides with vacation season for most Americans. Don’t let the fear of a hurricane ruin your travel plans. Plan ahead and follow our tips for traveling during hurricane season.

  • Travel early. Aim to take your vacation during the start of hurricane season in June when storms are less frequent and often less severe.
  • Check the weather. While it might seem obvious, make sure you check the weather in advance. Hurricanes typically take time to develop and are detectable at least a week before they hit. Even though they can be unpredictable, watching the forecast helps you stay prepared.
  • Avoid flying. Instead of worrying about flight delays and cancelations, plan a trip to a destination reachable by car or train.
  • Purchase travel insurance. With a travel insurance plan, you ensure you will be partially or completely reimbursed if a trip gets canceled.
  • Check hotel hurricane policies. Many hotels, particularly those in the Caribbean, offer guests special deals or refunds in the event a hurricane lands during their stay.
  • Download your airline’s app. Make sure you have your airline’s app downloaded to your phone for up-to-date information about delays and cancelations.
  • Consult the National Hurricane Center. Visit the National Hurricane Center’s website for news and resources.
