Tips / Destination

As the second-largest city in Germany, Hamburg often gets overlooked in lieu of Berlin or Munich. However, the city does boast a nice variety of museums celebrating its past and culture. Check out some of the best below.

A little unusual but lots of fun, Spicy’s Museum is the only spice museum in existence. You’ll find more than 800 exhibits and hands-on displays on the history of spices, how they’re grown, transported, collected and more over the last five centuries.

Following along the foodie favorites, the Chocoversum Schokoladen Museum is all about the sweet stuff. Go on a 90-minute tour covering the growth of cocoa beans, collection, processing and the final journey to store shelves. You’ll thankfully receive some samples throughout.

The Kunsthalle Hamburg is home to an impressive art collection, with items stretching back 700 years, starting with medieval altars. The museum was founded in 1850 and includes three connected buildings.

The International Maritime Museum was once a private collection that morphed into what it is today. Guests find 10 floors of 26,000 ship models; 50,000 ship construction plans; and 5,000 works of art. The museum is also housed within a historic warehouse.

The Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial Site is a collection of 15 preserved concentration camp buildings and historic exhibits revolving around what was the largest camp in northern Germany. The camps existed for seven years, 1938–1945, and a new memorial site was opened in 2005.
