TIME a released a year-end round up of the 50 best iPhone and Android apps of the year, and several fall into the travel category.
The top 6 travel apps of 2016 include:
WhatsApp calling and messaging app allows users to connect abroad for free with a data or WiFi connection. Users can send videos, messages and images, as well as place calls, without incurring additional international charges. TIME’s data shows the app to be the top messaging app in 55 percent of the world.
Google Translate seems like an obvious choice for the list. The app allows users to translate across 103 languages and has offline access to 52. The app can automatically translate text using the phone’s camera in 29 languages.
Day One gives travelers a digital journal for recording every day of a trip. The app backs up user notes and photos.
Hitlist helps travelers find cheap flights without sifting through loads of data from different websites. You can receive updates and push notifications, too.
Waze is popular for its community-based data platform collecting information on traffic jams and road construction to help you avoid slow-downs.
And finally, Google Trips allows you to tap into your Gmail and Google Calendar accounts to pull together travel information like reservations and confirmations. The app also sends out suggestions for nearby activities.
