EDM’s rise in India is not without its detractors. Organizers of the wildly popular Sunburn Festival recently had to move the event to Pune after Goa Tourism Authorities allegedly held their license for ransom. VH1 Supersonic did the same thing, marking increased tensions between India’s growing nightlife market and the communities where these events are held.
The move is a blow to Goa’s music culture, which helped develop modern psytrance in the early days of electronic music, a popular genre in India that draws rave tourists from around the world. Sunburn Festival is particularly influential in the scene for bringing A-list DJs like Tiësto and Deadmau5 to India. While Goa has become something of a tourist trap in recent years, the festival’s new location in Pune provides a more tasteful setting, in addition to being easily accessible from Mumbai.
