Health & Wellness

Traveling offers deep insights into the inner being … along with a hint of overwhelming exhaustion. Whether you are planning a cosmopolitan European adventure or a trekking journey through the Andes, here are some inventive ways to include stress-reducing yoga into your travel routine.

-Pack a light and durable yoga mat designed for long-distance travel. Many mats offer comfort without the extra weight of your at-home mat.

-Add yoga to tight spaces. Simple yoga moves can be implemented in a corner of the airport or in your hotel room. A standard sun salutation routine a few times first thing in the morning can help loosen tight muscles and improve circulation.

-Do airplane yoga. Long flights inhibit circulation and cause muscle cramping. Sit up straight in your seat and take deep breaths. Add a standing forward bend while you wait for the bathroom. Lengthen your spine with a half forward bend and torso twists in your seat. Finally, stretch your quads while you stand next your seat. Many health experts recommend these modified yoga moves while flying.

-Sign up for a workshop. If you’re surrounded by loud city noises or just overwhelmed with traveling, look for a local yoga class or workshop. A couple of hours in a structured, quiet environment can help revitalize you after a long trip. It’s also an engaging way to listen to a new language.

-Take a hike and bring your yoga mat. If you’re in cosmopolitan cities like Prague, London or Vienna, there are a plethora of beautiful trails just outside of town. If you’re already in a rural area, take your pick of lush outdoor retreats. Research the area and incorporate the scenery into your yoga experience.
