Under $100 / North America

The naval base town of Norfolk, Va., harbors a lot more than battleships and expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean. Home to a bevvy of restaurants, live music venues and one of the state’s largest malls, Norfolk appeals to all tastes.

Put a pep in your step with a hearty Southern breakfast at Handsome Biscuit, a small venue with a small menu, but enough ingredients and flavor to wake up the sleepiest traveler.

Those with a heavy interest in the U.S. Navy and maritime history or just a general fascination with large ships must make a trip to Nauticus. This museum is located on the waterfront and is also the site of the USS Wisconsin, a battleship from World War II, the Korean War and the Gulf Wars. Admission fees start at $15.95 and go up from there depending on exhibit selection.

Work up an appetite by browsing the shops at MacArthur Center and stopping through the food court for an energizing lunch at California Pizza Kitchen, Johnny Rocket’s diner or Firehouse Subs.

As night approaches, catch a live concert at the NorVa, the longstanding performing art center located downtown. For more in the realm of fine arts, visit the Virginia Opera or the Virginia Stage Company for a dose of live theater and singing. Although Norfolk is one of Virginia’s smaller cities, there is no lack of things to do and see at reasonable prices.
