Bet you never knew dinosaurs liked to dance. The Dinosaur Dance Floor in Sucre is a plot of land in Bolivia where more than 5,000 dinosaurs used to congregate in order to bust a move.
Okay, maybe they weren’t actually dancing — we’re pretty sure there wasn’t music back in Prehistoric times — but the region did host six different species who traversed the limestone wall in which these footprints can be found. Discovered in 1994, the wall known as Cal Orcko is covered in thousands of prints placed in strange patterns that led scientists to deem the wall the “dinosaur dance floor.” Like any discovery of this kind, an amusement park was immediately built right next to it.
One of the biggest draws is the 1,200-foot baby T-Rex print path sealed into the wall, the largest of any ever found on Earth. The 68-million-year-old limestone wall is endangered due to erosion, so scientists are working hard to designate it a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can still get pretty close to enjoy the views.
Parque Cretácico next door is a great alternative place thanks to a viewing platform built at the edge of the park overlooking the footprints. Inside you’ll also find dozens of life-sized fiberglass statues of dinosaurs that once lived in the region, along with a museum, library, gift shops and a restaurant.
While there are numerous vestiges of dinosaur life all around the world, the Dinosaur Dance Floor is truly a unique experience thanks to the sheer amount of footprints to be seen. It’s a great little daytrip, especially for those who are fans of history.
