Tips / Travel

Holiday train rides don’t have to be all Santa and sugar-crazed kids pretending they’re on The Polar Express. Enjoy one of these adult-friendly holiday train rides sure to put you in a festive mood.

Grapevine Vintage Railroad

Grapevine, Texas, (called the Christmas capital of the state) offers a holiday wine train that’s already off to a good start with its adults-only status. You get two glasses of wine with your ticket, passed hors d’oeuvres and live music.

Holiday Express Spiked!

The 1880 Train runs through the hills of South Dakota, and the adults-only spiked version of the holiday train ride comes with spiked hot cocoa in a keepsake mug. Plus, you can buy additional mulled wine before departing, and bring it onboard.

Sacramento RiverTrail

In West Sacramento, Calif., combine a holiday train ride with gourmet dining. Though not adults-only (children ages 13 and up are allowed), the ride is pretty adults-oriented. The three-course dinner includes a glass of wine and the menu is inspired by the holiday season, with plenty of root vegetables and pumpkin.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Travel through Cuyahoga Valley National Park and be sure to wear your ugliest Christmas sweater! The Ugly Sweater Holiday Train Ride is 21 and up, and features holiday beers, wine, snacks and an ugly sweater photo contest.
