We are all tied into the seasons somehow — whether through holidays, sports or a simple love of snow. With the ease of modern life, sometimes the seasons do not seem as crucial as they once were. This is just an illusion. Every season is an indication of where we are in life and in the world. As such, these markers play a daily role in our lives and our food cravings. Often we want to eat hydrating foods in summer like melons, cucumbers and berries, while winter brings a desire for more fattening and filling foods like avocados and squash.
Understanding the seasons as they exist for where you live is essential for a more balanced lifestyle. All climates have seasons no matter how subtle and eating the foods harvested during these seasons works to our benefit. The availability of crops and certain kinds of food is certainly one of the more clear-cut reasons to eat seasonally. Winter often brings squash, lettuces and avocados, depending on which state you call home.
Locally grown foods do not need to travel far, better for the environment. Also, seasonal foods are more plentiful, which means they are cheaper, a benefit always welcome. There are easy and convenient online tools that will help you find foods grown locally by season. It is a great way to eat more vegetables for less money, all while giving the environment a little bit of a rest.
