Tips / Travel

Forget Napa. Here are some underrated wine regions to visit this year.

Georgia

The small country has been coming into its own in the world of travel, and that includes wine. There’s plenty of charm and tradition to be had, and the main wine region is Kakheti, near the Caucasus Mountains, where you’ll find the wine fermenting underground in terracotta jars.

Tasmania

You know the main Australian wines, but what about the Tasmanian varieties? There are four main wine trails throughout Tasmania to choose from. Plus, the unique locale makes it an interesting spot to stop while simultaneously visiting Sydney, Adelaide or Melbourne.

Greece

Beyond being a fantastic destination to visit in general, Greece is a no-brainer for wine aficionados. Opt for Santorini or northwest Greece for some of the best experiences.

Morocco

Never thought of Morocco as a wine destination? Think again. Though you may have never tired a Moroccan wine, it doesn’t mean the locals don’t know what they’re doing. The country has a wine heritage extending to Phoenician times and lasting through the Islamic takeover in the 600s. Winemaking received a revitalization after French colonization in the 1800s. The wine regions are mostly near the Atlantic coast, and red varieties like Syrah are popular.

Switzerland

Switzerland produces Old World Pinot Noir, and the wine region of Bündner Herrschaft is beautiful, both for its villages and the natural scenery. Plus, the region’s central town of Maienfeld is home to everyone’s favorite Swiss character from childhood — Heidi. More than 50 different wines are produced and the vineyard hiking trails are worth a try.
