If you’re nervous about flying, take heart: Last year was the safest on record for air travel. It was also the busiest.
The Civil Aviations Safety Review released data last month that looked at statistics from the United Nations’ civil aviation authority ICAO on 35 million flights. Only 111 saw accidents and just two included fatalities. That means there’s one accident per 16 million flights.
Despite air traffic increasing by 3 percent, the decrease in accidents and fatalities is heartening. This is the third consecutive year for a drop in fatalities.
Some airlines are safer than others. Qantas has been the safest in the world for four years running and was applauded as being “the lead airline in virtually every major operational safety advancement over the past 60 years.” It has a fatality-free record.
The full report and details about the methodology are available here.
