Tips / Travel

There are certain expenses that are easy to cut back on when money gets tight while traveling —avoiding fancy meals or pricey tourist traps is easy. But you still have to sleep somewhere — preferably at a safe, clean place. Fortunately, there are several ways to get a good night’s sleep while keeping costs down.

Bargain

If it’s low season where you’re traveling, owners are more flexible about pricing. After all, they’d rather fill up the room, even at a lower price, than having it remain empty. Call ahead and ask what the best price they can offer for your particular date is; it’s often lower than the advertised one. If you have more flexibility, showing up for same-night lodging can score you even better rates.

Rent

If you’re staying in the same location for more than a few nights, it’s often cheaper to rent a room or apartment. You’ll often get to experience a more local neighborhood and even stock up on food to make some of your own meals (save money and calories!). Check out sites like Airbnb or VRBO to find your next temporary home.

Work

Are hostels more your style than hotels? If you’ll be sticking around for several weeks, many hostels are happy to have you work several hours a day in exchange for free room and board. Duties usually include manning the front desk, keeping common areas tidy and organizing fun social events for guests. Bonus: you’ll meet tons of new people!

Housesit

f you love animals, securing a housesitting position is a great way to see a new place while caring for someone’s pet. Arrangements can range from several days to several months at a time. Check out sites like Trusted Housesitters and Mind My House. Though most housesitting sites require a small subscription fee, it’s easily recouped and worth it if you plan on pursuing this type of travel frequently.
