In 2014, Time Out Market debuted in Lisbon. The food hall concept features a variety of vendors, offering a glimpse into the culinary and cultural make up of the city. Time Out Market Lisboa quickly became one of the city’s most popular attractions.
The building that houses it, Mercado da Ribeira, was built in the 1890s as a food market. Located near the Tagus River, Time Out Market took over the space in 2014. There are dozens of vendors selling regional specialties from pastries to Portuguese wine. Be sure to sample cod cakes, canned seafood, fresh seafood, cured meats and pastél de nata (egg tart pastry).
Long tables take up space in the center of the market for communal seating. During peak times, you will need to hunt for a seat. If the main hall is too busy, check out the vendors on the outer perimeter of the building, some have outdoor seating in the warmer weather.
As with any crowded venue, be prepared to wait in vendor and bathroom lines, keep an eye on your belongings and grab an open seat if you see one. The market opens daily at 10 a.m. There is no entrance fee, but food and drink are pay-as-you-go.
If you can’t make it to Lisbon, there are markets set to open in New York City, Miami, Boston and Chicago through 2019.
