Exploring a new country on horseback is an exciting adventure. It allows you to see sights outside of the city limits and landscapes you might not know exist. But hopping on a horse without preparation is also a good way to get hurt.
Take Lessons
Overseas in a foreign country is not the best place to ride a horse for the first time. Language barriers, lack of health insurance and no knowledge of your surroundings can make you nervous, which your horse will sense and take advantage of. Take a couple of lessons back home before attempting a tour while you travel.
Exercise Your Core
Horseback riding is not recommended for travelers out of shape. It requires a great deal of core and length strength in order to keep the horse in line. Doing some exercises in the week leading up to the riding tour will help your body prepare for the strain.
Be Honest
Your guide will assess your skill level when it comes to riding a horse. This is not a time to let your ego do the talking. Aim for the easiest horse they have unless you want to get yourself and the animal injured.
Dress Properly
Baggy jeans and tennis shoes are not appropriate for riding a horse. Instead, opt for tighter pants that won’t catch on the equipment and boots. If you’re unsure of what outfit to wear, contact the tour operator ahead of time and ask.
Be Confident
Be confident in your skills before heading off on the tour. If you’re not ready to ride, let your guide know so he can work with you until you’re comfortable enough to handle the horse on your own. Study the equipment and practice trotting the horse around the stable before heading off.
