Tips / Destination

Experience something new and exciting on your next trip with a visit to the world’s largest cave. Son Doong Cave, located in the Quang Binh province in Vietnam, was discovered in 2009 and is estimated to be anywhere from 2–5 million years old. The name Son Doong means mountain river cave, as it was created by river water eroding away limestone beneath a mountain.

The cave is more than 650 feet wide, 492 feet high and approximately 5.5 miles long. Those willing to adventure into the massive, beautiful cave will discover the Garden of Edam, a tiny jungle at the bottom, a rapid river and incredible natural formations including striking stalactites and stone sculptures.

Accessing and traversing the cave is no small feat. The cave is hidden in the rugged Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, near the Laos border. The cave is part of a large network of more than 150 caves, many not yet surveyed, in the Annamite Mountains. It takes six hours of walking along a forest path from Truong Son Highway to reach the entrance, and traversing the cave takes days of hiking, scrambling and trekking through the rugged trails and caverns with the help of knowledgeable guides. Oxalis is currently the only tour operator bringing tourists to the cave.
