Tips / Travel

Renting a room or shared apartment from Airbnb is the closest a traveler can get to experiencing a touch of home while on the road. One of these cozy rentals does not always come with the same conveniences, however. See below to learn how to deal with common issues that may arise when renting space found on one of the world´s most popular vacation rental websites.

Read the terms and conditions. It’s easy to accept the terms and conditions without reading every single word. Make sure you know the cancelation policy in case there is a problem. If the place is not what you expected you may be entitled to a full refund. Read the cancelation policy as each property may have a different policy, from flexible to moderate to strict.

Ensure the legality of the property. Some nations have been enforcing strict regulations against renting private property for short-term periods. All legal properties should be registered with the local tourism bureau. When in doubt, request this number and/or a copy of the property´s registration.

Consult the resolution page. Airbnb has a specific page dedicated to resolving issues between hosts and guests. If push comes to shove and the rental space turns out to be a nightmare in any way, it is always possible to find common ground (and hopefully a refund).
