Tips / Destination

While the beaches of the Costa del Sur become overrun with package tourists from all over Europe and beyond, there is plenty more to see in Spain during the summer months.

Beyond the beaches, many people flock to the capital, Madrid, or cultural capital, Barcelona. It’s not to say these destinations aren’t worth a visit, but the aim of this guide is to point out destinations that will let you see the real Spain and get beneath the skin of the country.

Spain is a country of many contradictions, with strong separatist movements in Catalonia and the Basque Country. San Sebastian lies in the latter, arranged around a charming bay. The city has become a culinary capital and offers a great window into Basque culture.

On the opposite side of the country, Valencia has lived in the shadow of northern neighbor Barcelona for too long. The city is a great place to visit in its own right, with a lively culinary scene and plenty of cutting-edge architecture. Another reason to visit is the La Tomatina festival in nearby Bunol, where locals get together each August to pelt each other with the red fruit!

If it wouldn’t be a holiday without sun, sea and sand, Cadiz offers a great alternative destination. Perched on a strip of land that juts into the sea, the city has carved out a reputation as a liberal stronghold. It’s the oldest city in Spain, and has something of an oddball reputation. It’s also got great seafood.

Another coastal highlight is the city of A Coruña, in northern Spain. This oft-overlooked city is great in the summer months, with good food, beaches and culture. The boho vibe also leads to comparisons with the British city of Brighton, and vintage hunters will spend hours in the many independent boutiques.
