Sprinting among the hundreds of tuk tuks, tourists and motorbikes in Thailand are thousands of dogs in need of help. The dogs in Thailand are often left to fend for themselves and don’t receive proper food or medical care. They’re usually covered in mange and fleas and receive no treatment when injured.
Thankfully, shelters are popping up all over the country to help these wonderful creatures but many of them are in dire need of volunteers. That means there’s a perfect opportunity to explore a foreign country while also helping animals in need.
Many of the rescue shelters in Thailand need overseas volunteers to help them rescue pups, give them medical treatment, help with adoptions and clean their kennels. Meanwhile, you’ll also be immersed in a new culture where you’ll learn all about the local way of life at the same time.
There are many options to choose from. In the northern region Care for Dogs operates out of Chiang Mai. PAWS is a great option for anyone interested in spending time in Bangkok. Down south you can help with pups in need while also enjoying some of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches when you volunteer with Lanta Animal Welfare in Krabi or with Soi Dog Foundation in Phuket.
Most of these shelters will either provide accommodation during your stay or work with you to find something within your budget. Volunteer opportunities typically start at a one-month minimum and go up from there if you’re a good fit.
