When it comes to free museum entry, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., has the right idea by opening the doors to all its museums for free. Unfortunately, not all of the world’s artistic treasures are as easily or inexpensively viewable. There are, however, a few cities that harbor these havens of expression and allow the public to view priceless works of art for free, including (but not limited to) the below.
Da Vinci and Van Gogh are just a few of the recognizable artists you’ll spot in London’s gallery, where more than 2,000 pieces of art are on display. After browsing the mastery for no charge, you may be inspired to step into one of the museum’s lectures or workshops, which cost extra.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
“The Met” is an iconic New York institution where more than 2 million exhibits can take years to peruse. The museum encourages guests to pay what they can when they arrive at the museum, but those buying tickets online will be charged a small fee.
Set atop the illustrious LA hills, the architectural and art institution is worth visiting even if just for views of the city and ocean. Free entry exposes visitors to a variety of American, European and Asian art spanning 200 years.
With more than 200 years in existence, this Spanish art institution houses works of El Greco and Goya, to name a few. Normal entry costs €15, but free entry is available on weekdays 6–8 p.m.
