Signing up for a volunteer program overseas can be a fantastic and rewarding way to see the world. Not only will you be able to connect with a local community, but you also will learn more about your destination and yourself than you would as a regular tourist. Before you begin your research into “voluntourism” opportunities, ask yourself the following questions.
What causes do you care about? The first question should focus on the causes you care about the most, such as healthcare, children, clean water and/or animal welfare. This will help you narrow down your search
What skills can you offer? Volunteering can be a great way to learn a new skill, sort of like an unpaid internship. But if you are vying to work for a popular cause, see if you can contact the organization directly and submit your experience regarding your specific skill. This may give you a leg up in the application process, if there is one.
What is your time frame? Programs can have different time frames, from a few weeks to six months to a full year. Come up with a specific amount of time you would like to dedicate to a project. If you are unsure, commit to the minimum amount and see if you can extend after some time.
How will you finance it? Some global volunteer programs offer housing or a small stipend for their volunteers, but if they don’t, you’ll have to budget finances for lodging, meals and any traveling you plan to do before or after the program.
