Safety

Heading to a different country is so exciting, but it’s also important to be safe and smart when traveling. Depending on the country you are visiting, there’s a chance you could step off the plane and into strikes, protests or an otherwise less than ideal situation. How can a traveler stay up-to-date on the latest developments in their soon-to-be vacation destination? Here are a few easy ways.

Set up a Google alert.

As soon as you know you are traveling to a country, set up a Google News alert with the country as keyword. That way, you’ll get a daily digest of top headlines, giving you a quick idea of what’s going on in the country.

Search Twitter.

This is a great last-minute option, just in case you have reason to believe something is going on. A search will turn up any news for the country, including up-to-the-minute updates from people on the ground.

Scan the papers.

Figure out what the top daily newspaper is for your destination, and make it your homepage until your trip. It’s a no-work way to get instant access to every day’s headlines, and you’ll know what issues or people are repeated regularly.

Ask around.

Have a friend who seems to know about news as soon as it happens? Let them know where you are heading and see if they have heard anything recently. You can also ask them to keep you in the loop if anything does happen or pass along any news sites they frequent.
