Most visitors to Brazil will head to the iconic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro, but there are plenty beautiful stretches of sand which do not attract such large crowds.
Hug the coastline on a trip south from Rio in order to visit the island of Ilha Grande, where cars are forbidden. As such, most people use boats to visit the many beautiful beaches dotted around the island, but if you have an appetite for a trek, walk the four hours to the sublime Lopes Mendes beach, where chances are high you will have the sand to yourself.
After returning to the mainland, travel to the colonial town of Paraty, from which the beach at Trinidad is an easy daytrip. Skip the more developed beach near town and make the 20-minute hike over nearby hills, behind which a natural rock lagoon provides protection for swimmers from the strong waves.
Ilha Do Mel (Honey Island) is situated just east of Curitiba, and is a slice of sandy paradise well worth stopping at. Explore the sandy paths which crisscross the island, taking a surfboard with you to catch some of the most picturesque waves you’ve ever seen.
Further down the coast is the intriguing city of Florianopolis. Skip the industrial zone on the mainland and head straight over to the island, which is home to the most interesting architecture, and 42 different beaches to explore. Head to the popular Praia Mole, which is famous for good reason, or head to the less crowded Lagoinha do Leste. The hour hike to reach Lagoinha deters many visitors who opt to stay nearer the center of town, but those who make the effort will be rewarded by the sight of a rocky coastline backed by rainforest.
