Tips / Destination

The peaceful Potomac River calmly graces the green shores of the nation’s capital while sun worshippers kayak, canoe and paddle their way from bridge to bridge. But then the yearn strikes for more aquatic activities like swimming, D.C. residents head out of town to the beaches along the Atlantic coast. Whether for a daytrip or a weekend getaway, Atlantic beaches are a quick drive from busy D.C.

Dewey Beach/Rehoboth Beach, Del.

Known for its raucous party scene among 20somethings stuck in their post-collegiate, carefree mentalities, Dewey Beach also has calmer corners. The amiable beach town offers various water sports like parasailing, jet skiing and surfing, all just two-and-a-half hours from Washington, D.C. A few miles north is the more close-knit community of Rehoboth Beach with an old-fashioned boardwalk and LGBT-friendly establishments.

Ocean City, Md.

Nearly three hours east of D.C. is the charming yet often crowded beach of Ocean City. With a smattering of bars mixed with wholesome holiday-goers and a classic boardwalk complete with shops selling tacky garb and saltwater taffy, O.C. has something for everyone. Partiers should plant themselves at Seacrets Bar where patrons can sip cocktails while wading waist deep in the bay.

Cape May, N.J.

Bed and breakfasts abound in the cozy waterfront town in South Jersey. Quaint scenery, romantic restaurants and a peaceful environ are only 3.5 hours from D.C.
