Tips / Destination

Visitors to Cuba sometimes refer to the country as a living museum thanks to the crumbling architecture and continued use of mid-20th-century vehicles.

At the same time there are a huge number of museums that contain genuine exhibits from throughout Cuba’s fascinating history. Due to the continued rule of the Socialist government, the Cuban revolution features heavily, but there are other museums to see as well.

Many of these museums are concentrated in Havana, including the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana, where you will find both Cuban and European artists on display. Art lovers should also visit the Museum of Decorative Arts in Vedado.

Learn more about the world’s most famous revolutionary at the Museo de Comandancia del Che in Old Havana, where you can see Che Guevara’s old office. You can also visit his tomb in Santa Clara, a site of pilgrimage for many Che fans.

Elsewhere in Cuba you can visit the Architectural Museum of Trinidad to find out more about the elaborate buildings of the country. At the other end of the island, Santiago de Cuba has rooms devoted to archaeology, history and art.

History is everywhere you look in Cuba, but you’ll understand the country better if you take a look around some of these museums.
