Onsen are natural hot springs caused by volcanic activity, and there are thousands of them around Japan. Here are some of the best.
Kusatsu
Kusatsu onsen in Gunma prefecture is one of the most famous in the whole country, with a number of spas and resorts as well as public springs free to access. If you are here in winter you can also go skiing, and the surrounding mountains are also great for hiking in summer.
Hakone
Hakone onsen is less than two hours from Tokyo on public transport, a boon for those who want a quick trip from the capital. There are several luxury inns, or ryokan, in the area, as well as a number of hotel resorts.
Yufuin
Yufuin onsen is an incredible spot with views of Mount Yufu. There are lots of ryokans in town with their own private baths, but most let visitors in for the day for prices that vary from $4–18.
Fuji Kawaguchiko
Fuji Kawaguchiko onsen is amazing all year-round but particularly beautiful in springtime when the surrounding cherry blossom trees are flowering. It’s at the bottom of Mount Fuji as well, with great views of Japan’s most famous volcano.
