When most people think of central Florida, their mind goes to the many amusement parks — Disney World, Universal Studios, to name a few. However, this region houses more than just man-made marvels. Central Florida is home to many lakes, rivers and bays begging to be explored on a kayak or canoe.
Homosassa River
With manatees, turtles, and countless species of both salt and freshwater fish, this off-path river is perfect for those wanting to experience the wildlife of Florida in a secluded spot. This eight-mile river is about an hour northwest of Orlando.
Rock Springs Run
Just north of Orlando in Orange County lies a nine-mile river of moderate kayaking difficulty with many twists and turns. Terrain and wildlife such as alligators, heron, otter, and even monkeys make this path an interesting part of any visit to central Florida.
Cocoa Beach
Paddle through mangrove tunnels in a saltwater creek on the east coast of Florida at Cocoa Beach. In some seasons, you will see dolphins and manatees on your journey down the 1000 Islands Conservation Area. Although there are no monkeys like you might see at Rock Springs Run or Silver Springs State Park, the river stemming from Cocoa Beach is actually named Banana River.
Little Manatee River
In the Tampa Bay area, check out this unspoiled piece of Florida, ranging from forests to marsh as it winds through a state forest. With some of the cleanest waters in Florida, you’ll be surely impressed.
The next time you visit Florida, try checking out one of these secret hideaways for a bit of a break from the chatter of amusement park tourism. This area is particularly unique for its diverse wildlife and excellent weather that lends itself to outdoor enjoyment.
