Tips / Destination

Ecuador houses one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. The large array of wildlife, plants and unique environment plays heavily into the city of Quito’s rich culinary atmosphere. Here are the best restaurants to try when you’re in town.

Zazu

Peruvian chef Rafael Perez cooks up some delightful local cuisine with a focus on seafood harvested nearby. Octopus parrilla and snow crab ceviche are staples on the menu, but if you make it here in August he creates some truly mouthwatering experiences with the local lobster. It also doesn’t hurt the restaurant houses a beautiful, glass-ceiling wine cellar.

URKO Cocina Local

URKO Cocina Local earns as many raves about its staff as it does its food. The restaurant serves local, traditional dishes but with exciting twists you likely won’t experience anywhere else. Their options include either a 13- or seven-course meal so you’ll be stuffed by the time you leave. The wait staff is always happy to go through the menu with you and explain each dish.

Empanadas de Morocho de la Ulloa

Delicious, affordable and undeniably authentic, the cuisine served at Empanadas de Morcho de la Ulloa is nothing short of fantastic. This small café is family owned and run by extremely affable cook Alicia who enjoys conversing with her customers while sharing a meal. The empanadas are better than any others you’ll find in Quito.

Fried Bananas

The namesake dish at Fried Bananas is a staple of the Ecuadorian diet and after tasting one here you’ll understand why. Delectable, generously portioned and affordable, this restaurant is a great option for travelers looking for a heavy meal and a great atmosphere. It’s hidden away from the main streets but worth the walk to get there.
