Tips / Travel

Once schoolchildren are back in classes, prices start to drop for holidays across Europe. There are a number of interesting spots to visit without worrying about squawking families and the high prices they bring.

Portugal has turned into something of a trendy destination with millennial travelers, drawn in by cheap prices and friendly locals. Avoid the resorts of the Algarve and head to the capital city of Lisbon instead. It’s affordable, packed to the brim with culture and stays warm throughout September.

If you don’t like the look of Lisbon, the city of Porto offers a fantastic alternative. Dive into the cobbled streets or spend some time on the beach and learn about the historic production of port wine.

Over the border in Spain, the historic city of Seville will be winding down from the madness of summer. With the crowds dissipating and the scorching summer sun relenting a little, September is the perfect time to visit.

If you are a fan of wine, or simply enjoy spending time in France, Bordeaux is a great option. The city sits on the banks of the majestic Garonne River, surrounded by some of the most famous vineyards in the world.

September is a great time to visit the Italian island of Sardinia, using the city of Cagliari as your jumping-off point. By now the crowds have deserted the island, and you’ll have time to enjoy the peace and quiet of the amazing beaches.

For those with the freedom to travel outside peak season, there are plenty of great deals to be found. Shop around and you can find yourself a smashing holiday for a fraction of the price it would have cost just a month earlier.
