There’s a lot of advice about when to book flights to save money. Here are the latest recommendations from CheapAir.com’s 2018 Annual Airfare Study.
The company shows 70 days in advance is the best time to book a U.S. domestic flight. That’s an average number, so it won’t work in all cases, but it does help travelers set a window and a strategy.
The website says buying a ticket 169–319 days in advance will cost you about $50 more on average. If you book 112–168 days before traveling or about four to six months, you will pay about $20 more on average.
The best booking window comes 21–121 days ahead of travel, a large window, but fares are generally about 5 percent lower in this span. Any closer to the travel date, and prices begin to rise.
