Each September, PETCO holds their annual three-day Surf City Surf Dog competition in Huntington Beach, Calif. This year’s festivities take place on the weekend of May 25–27, welcoming dogs and dog owners not only from the surrounding area, but also from all around the world.
The competition is preceded by a large slew of events, beginning with “Yappy Hour” an opening red-carpet gala complete with “paparazzi,” an in-house DJ and dog-themed cocktails, taking place at the Shorebreak Hotel.
Next comes the The PAWabunga dog costume contest, where hounds can sport their favorite outfits in front of a panel of judges. An awards ceremony announcing the winners takes place shortly after, along with the adopt-a-dog event.
On Saturday, the festival moves to the International Surfing Museum, where dogs of particular prestige are inducted into the Surf Dog Walk of Fame.
Finally, on Sunday, it all culminates with the main event — the Surf Dog Competition on the sands of Huntington Beach. Here, contestants are divided into groups according to size and compete in a series of heats, until one dog stands alone as champion.
