Budget Eating in Birmingham, Ala.

Birmingham is a city brimming with southern culture, friendly attitudes and, most importantly, excellent comfort foods. If you find yourself in town on a budget and need advice on where to eat, check out these affordable joints.

Taco Mama

Taco Mama is a beloved staple in Birmingham and with three locations around town they’re not hard to find. Inside you’ll find cheap tacos, burritos and chorizo, but one of the local favorites is the array of Mexican beer available.

Bendy’s Cookies & Cream

Food trucks are all the rage in Birmingham and Bendy’s offers up something kind of unique: a make-your-own ice cream sandwich concept. You can mix and match here to make the perfect dessert for your taste buds at quite an affordable price.

Brito’s

Brito’s is actually a Latin grocery store located on Greensprings, but most people don’t know they have a small dining area inside where you can gorge on delicious Mexican-style tamales. Cheap, delicious and pretty darn quaint describes this place perfectly.

Yo Mama’s

Yo Mama’s has a well-earned reputation for being one of the best chicken and waffle joints in the country. However, it also has plenty of other prime examples of southern cooking for either brunch or lunch.
