Check out Osaka for a look at Japan away from Tokyo, with a distinct food culture and history.
For breakfast, head to Eggs n Things in Shinshaibashi. Eating out for breakfast isn’t a massive deal in Japan, but this place is great ($12). Portions are known to be filling, too.
After breakfast, head to Osaka Castle to explore the 500-year-old fortification and the beautiful park that surrounds it. Don’t forget to check out the plum tree orchard, one of the biggest in the area ($10).
For lunch, go to Kuromon Ichiba Market, known for its fish. Grab a seat at one of the vendors around the edge of the market and enjoy a fresh lunch ($25). It’s a real people-watching bonanza, too.
In the afternoon take a walk around the Namba shopping district and pop into the Hozenji Yokocho temple, and then go to Dotonbori, where you will find a number of great eating and drinking spots.
At dinner time chow down on a number of regional specialties at the street food stalls ($20) and then go to Moon Tower for a big night out on the town ($5 per drink).
