Change is Coming to Economy Class

Flying economy is the standard option for most travelers, but it’s not always a choice. The expense of first-class seats only add salt to the wound when passing the private sleeping cabins with extra legroom on your way to the back of the plane. Fortunately, there are a handful of upsides to flying economy, some of which are on the horizon for 2017.

The first and most obvious benefit to flying economy is the price. Currently, international economy seats are priced lower than ever. Flying from the United States to Europe is completely possible for less than $300 each way thanks to European budget airlines extending their service abroad.

Another advantage is the expanding overhead bins. Rather than fighting with other passengers for precious luggage storage space, overhead bins are increasing in size, meaning you don’t have to rush on board to grab what’s left of the bin space, which may be many feet from your actual seat.

Once you’re settled into your economy seat, you’ll be able to enjoy improved seat-back entertainment. New systems coming to major airlines allow you to interact with other passengers through games, and browse movie and TV show selections faster and easier. You can also order food and drinks through the seat-back system.

Speaking of food, in-flight meals are getting an upgrade, even if your seat doesn’t. On some domestic flights, meals have become a luxury, something you would have to purchase on board rather than an included service. However, airlines like Delta and American are re-introducing free meals for long-haul flights, such as from coast to coast, meaning you don’t have to stock up at the airport convenience store before buckling in.

Interior Upgrades Begin Rolling Out Across United Fleet
